Fairy Tales - Mother Holle

I know you will probably be thinking fairy tales are just for little ones but let me assure you they are a healing medicine for all ages.

Why do you think your aged granny sat you on her knee and told you so beautifully those old stories? Do you think it was only to feel close to you, to see the gleam in your eyes, the delighted look on your face as you were being enchanted by the tale and to feel her joy of telling it to you?

Well, no –I will let you into a well kept secret – granny was as enchanted at that moment by the story as you were. In fact the story enchants us all!

Where on earth did we take the belief that’ fairy tales are only for kids ‘?
Believe me I have been a story teller for many years and I am always as nourished as the children by these fabulous tales from long ago.

Fairy tales are from ancient civilizations and from cultures which still had a close relationship to the angels, and it is from this world of the angels that the tales were derived. So even today, when our way of thinking is not particularly spiritual we can be nurtured by this angel food.

Just be brave enough to give this a try…

Read one of the Grimms Fairy Tales each night for a week before sleep (they are not going to take very long to read and you are not being a baby).

No need to analyse the story, just let it seep into your soul and it’s easy – just let the tale do its work.

You can read for a loved one who is ill or distressed, you can read for loved ones you are grieving for – no need to do anything else but think about the person and read to him / her .

Just like granny does to her little ones –enchantment will carry all who participate and you will feel the strengthening of your soul life.

True imagination and creativity will enrich your life and the lives of those to whom you tell the tales.

A Fairy Tale to Get You Started

MOTHER HOLLE

There was once a widow who had two daughters – one of them was pretty and hard working while the other was ugly and lazy.

The widow was fonder of the ugly and lazy child because she was her own daughter; the other girl was her stepdaughter and she was made to do all the work in the house. Every day she had to sit by a well and spin and spin till her fingers bled.

Now it happened that one day the spinning shuttle was covered with her blood so she dipped it into the well to wash it, but it dropped from her hand and fell to the bottom of the well.

She began to cry and ran to her stepmother and told her the story. The stepmother scolded her angrily and told her to go in the well and fetch it back.

So the girl went back and with sorrow in her heart she jumped into the well.
She lost her senses and when she awoke she was in a lovely meadow where the sun was shining and many thousands of flowers were growing.

Across this meadow she went and at last came to a baker’s oven full of bread.
The bread cried out “Take me out or I will burn,” so she took out the bread and went on up the hill.

She came to an apple tree full of apples which asked her to shake off the apples because they were ripe, so she shook the tree and gathered the apples into a heap.

She came to a little house with an old ugly woman who frightened her, but the old woman whose name was Mother Holle told her not to be afraid  and asked her to stay .

Mother Holle said she should do all the house work and make the feather bed every day by shaking the feathers till they flew so that there would be snow on the earth.

The woman was actually kind so the girl stayed and did all she was asked.
One day she felt homesick for her own people and asked Mother Holle if she could go back up to them again even though she was being well looked after.

Mother Holle was pleased to take her hand and lead her to a large door which opened as she reached it. Golden rain fell on the girl and she became completely covered in it.

Mother Holle told her she could have the gold because she had worked so hard and then she gave her back the spinning shuttle which had fallen into the well.

When the door closed, the girl was back above the earth near her home.
Of course, the stepmother and sister were pleased to see her covered in gold and they listened to her story.

The mother then wanted the same good fortune for her ugly and lazy daughter so she sat her by the well to spin until she had a prick of blood then threw the shuttle in the well.

The ugly sister went into the well and came to the same meadow but when she came to the bread she was too lazy to take it from the oven. She was not interested to shake the apple tree.

At Mother Holle’s house she was expecting the golden reward so she worked well for two days but then she became lazy and didn’t make Mother Holle’s feather bed by making the feathers fly.

Mother Holle tired of her laziness and told her to leave .The lazy girl thought of the golden rain and was happy to go.

But when she was led to the large door instead of golden rain a huge pot of black tar was emptied on her.

She went back above the earth and the thick black tar stayed on her forever and ever.
